The best Steam Deck games to start with are Stardew Valley, Hades, Balatro, Vampire Survivors and Hollow Knight if you want something small and under $25, Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077 if you want a big one, and Warframe if you want it free. All twelve carry Valve's "Steam Deck Verified" label and sat at 85% positive or higher on Steam on October 4, 2026. This is a shortlist, not a ranking of everything on Steam. Last checked: October 4, 2026.

Do this first: look for the Verified label on the Steam page before you buy anything. This is the step people skip, and it's the cheapest way to avoid a game that needs tweaking to run.

How We Picked These Steam Deck Games

We started from a shortlist of popular Deck games we chose ourselves, not from every game on Steam. Then we used two checks, both public and both dated October 4, 2026.

  1. The Verified label. We read each game's result from Steam's own compatibility report endpoint (linked here for Hades), which returns the category Valve assigned. Only games that came back as Verified stayed on the list.
  2. A high Steam score. We read each game's review totals from Steam's reviews API, all languages. Among the shortlisted games, only those at 85% positive or higher with at least 100,000 reviews stayed. These are all-languages totals, so they can run a little higher than the English-only summary on a store page.

Some well-known names on the shortlist fell out at step one. Dota 2, Team Fortress 2, Path of Exile and Deep Rock Galactic all came back as Playable, not Verified; we re-read each one's report on the same day. Brawlhalla is Verified but sits at "Mostly Positive" (about 80% of 414,000 reviews), under our cut. The order below is editorial, grouped by price and size, not a ranking by score. Nothing here is an affiliate link: every game links to its official Steam page.

What "Steam Deck Verified" Does and Doesn't Promise

Valve's Verified page says a Verified game "works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box." It lists four criteria: full controller support with proper icons and an automatic on-screen keyboard, support for the Deck's default resolution with legible text, no compatibility warnings, and, for games run through Proton, support for the game and its middleware, anti-cheat included. Valve's Playable label means the game may need manual tweaking. Unsupported means it isn't functional on the Deck.

The report for all twelve games lists the same four passes: the default controller configuration is fully functional, the controller glyphs match the Deck, interface text is legible, and the default configuration is performant. That is Valve's pass or fail. We found no frame-rate numbers behind it, so "performant" tells you the game meets Valve's standard, not how many frames per second you'll see.

On battery, Valve's tech specs list a 50Whr battery and "3-12 hours of gameplay," and the OLED page adds "content dependent." We found no per-game battery measurements for these twelve, so we don't promise any. If screen and battery are what you're weighing, our look at how the OLED model's display and battery compare with the LCD goes deeper.

Best Games for Steam Deck That Are Small, Cheap and Easy to Pick Up

1. Stardew Valley ($14.99)

Stardew Valley is ConcernedApe's farming game, filed on Steam under Indie, RPG and Simulation. It has the best score of the twelve: 98.5% positive out of about 1.04 million reviews. Our reading, not a test: a game built from small daily goals suits a handheld you pick up for twenty minutes.

2. Vampire Survivors ($4.99)

Vampire Survivors by poncle is the cheapest paid game here, at 98.3% positive out of about 266,000 reviews. Steam tags it Action, Casual, Indie and RPG. Casual is the cue: our reading is that it asks little of your attention and your controller. It's one of two games here with four genre labels, along with Dave the Diver.

3. Hades ($24.99)

Hades from Supergiant Games is an Action, Indie and RPG pick at 98.0% of about 309,000 reviews. Valve's report for it includes a note that external controllers aren't supported as the primary player's input (our reading: that matters if you dock the Deck and plan to use a gamepad).

4. Balatro ($14.99)

Balatro, made by LocalThunk, sits under Casual, Indie and Strategy with 97.8% positive of about 199,000 reviews. Our reading: a strategy game with few inputs is an easy fit for the Deck's controls.

5. Slay the Spire ($24.99)

Slay the Spire by Mega Crit is filed as Indie and Strategy and holds 97.5% out of about 219,000 reviews. It's the priciest of the small games here, at the same $24.99 as Hades.

6. Celeste ($19.99)

Celeste is an Action, Adventure and Indie platformer from Maddy Makes Games and Extremely OK Games, at 97.4% out of about 148,000 reviews.

7. Hollow Knight ($14.99)

Hollow Knight by Team Cherry is an Action and Adventure game at 96.9% positive of about 564,000 reviews. Its $14.99 regular price matches Stardew Valley and Balatro.

8. Dave the Diver ($19.99)

Dave the Diver, from MINTROCKET, mixes Adventure, Casual, RPG and Simulation tags at 96.5% positive of about 163,000 reviews. It's one of two games here with four genre labels, along with Vampire Survivors.

Big Steam Deck Games That Still Earned the Verified Label

9. Baldur's Gate 3 ($59.99)

Baldur's Gate 3 from Larian Studios is an Adventure, RPG and Strategy game at 96.8% positive out of about 860,000 reviews. Like Hades, Valve's report for it notes that external controllers aren't supported as the primary player's input (our reading: that matters if you dock the Deck and plan to use a gamepad). We found no battery figure for it. For long sessions, which chargers meet the Deck's 45W spec is worth a look.

10. Elden Ring ($59.99)

Elden Ring by FromSoftware is Action and RPG at 93.0% of about 1.16 million reviews, the most reviewed game on this list. It's Verified, which tells you the default setup passed Valve's performance check. It doesn't say how smooth it is, and we found no frame-rate data.

11. Cyberpunk 2077 ($59.99)

Cyberpunk 2077 from CD PROJEKT RED is filed under RPG. It has the lowest score of the twelve, 86.9% out of about 984,000 reviews, but it passes both checks.

Best Free Steam Deck Game

12. Warframe (Free)

Warframe, by Digital Extremes, is tagged Action, RPG and Free To Play, at 87.8% of about 679,000 reviews. Free to install doesn't mean nothing to buy: Steam's listing includes in-app purchases, and we couldn't confirm what they cover.

What to Add Once You Have a Few Games

Big installs fill the internal drive quickly. If you're going to keep several of these on the Deck, see the microSD card, case and screen protector worth adding to a handheld library before you run out of space.

What We Couldn't Verify

  • We didn't play these games on a Steam Deck for this list. Everything comes from Steam's public data and Valve's own pages.
  • The shortlist is ours. We didn't scan all of Steam, so a game missing here may well meet both checks.
  • The Verified label is a snapshot. Valve can change it, and patches can move scores. Both were read on October 4, 2026.
  • No frame rates, no battery per game. Valve's report says "performant" without a number, and its battery range is general.
  • Prices are the regular catalog price on Steam in US dollars. Several of these were discounted on the day we checked. We list the regular price and don't track sales, so check Steam.
  • Scores are all-languages totals. The English-only number on a store page can differ.
  • We didn't compare the LCD and OLED models for these games.
  • Genre notes are Steam's labels, and the "our reading" lines are inference, not test results.

FAQ

What does Steam Deck Verified mean?

Valve says a Verified game "works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box." It means the game passed Valve's checks for controls, display, no compatibility warnings and system support. It isn't a frame-rate guarantee. Valve's Playable label means the game may need manual tweaking.

What's the best free game on Steam Deck?

The best free Steam Deck game on our shortlist is Warframe: free to start, Verified, and 87.8% positive out of about 679,000 Steam reviews on October 4, 2026. It has in-app purchases, and we couldn't confirm what they cover, so set a limit first.

Can I play games that aren't Verified on a Steam Deck?

Often, yes. Valve says Playable games "may require some manual tweaking," such as using the touchscreen for a launcher. Unsupported games aren't functional on the Deck, according to Valve. Dota 2, Team Fortress 2, Path of Exile and Deep Rock Galactic all came back as Playable on October 4, 2026, so they missed our list.

What are the cheapest Steam Deck games on this list?

Vampire Survivors ($4.99), Stardew Valley ($14.99), Balatro ($14.99) and Hollow Knight ($14.99) are the cheapest paid picks here, all above 96% positive on Steam. Prices are regular catalog prices as of October 4, 2026. Warframe is free, but it sells in-game purchases.

How long does a Steam Deck battery last?

Valve's tech specs list "3-12 hours of gameplay" from a 50Whr battery, and its OLED page adds "content dependent." That range is general, not a per-game figure. We found no battery measurement for these twelve games, so we don't promise any.
